How to use this tool
Breed tendencies are averages — individual cats, especially mixed-breed shelter cats, can vary widely in personality. Spend time with a cat before adopting when you can, and ask shelter staff about their observed temperament.
How the matching works
This tool filters a set of 12 cat breeds against your answers on activity level, shedding tolerance, how much lap time you want, and whether the cat needs to be sociable with children or other pets. A breed is shown only if it satisfies every filter you set, so a narrow combination can return a short list or none at all. If that happens, relax whichever preference matters least to you.
Why breed matters less for cats than for dogs
Selective breeding in dogs produced enormous differences in size, energy, and working instinct. Cats were bred far less intensively and for far less time, so the range between breeds is narrower and individual personality carries proportionally more weight. Most cats in shelters are domestic shorthairs or longhairs with no breed label at all, and they make excellent pets.
Early handling and environment also shape a cat's sociability more than breed does. Kittens handled gently and often during their early weeks tend to be more confident with people for life. If you want a specific temperament, meeting adult cats whose personality is already settled is more reliable than choosing on breed reputation.

Frequently asked questions
What is the friendliest cat breed?
Ragdolls, Maine Coons, Burmese, and Birmans all have reputations for being people-oriented, and several tolerate handling better than average. Reputation is a tendency rather than a promise, and a well-socialised domestic shorthair from a shelter is often just as affectionate as any pedigree.
Which cats are best for people with allergies?
No cat is hypoallergenic. The main allergen, Fel d 1, is produced in saliva and skin and spreads through grooming, so even hairless breeds carry it. Siberians and Balinese are often described as producing less, though the evidence is weak and individual cats vary enormously. Spend real time with a specific cat before deciding.
Are certain cat breeds better with children?
Tolerance of noise and handling matters more than breed, but larger, laid-back breeds such as the Maine Coon and Ragdoll are commonly recommended for family homes. Just as important is teaching children how to approach a cat and giving the cat an elevated retreat it can reach whenever it wants to be left alone.
Do long-haired cats need more care?
Yes. Long-haired breeds generally need brushing several times a week, and sometimes daily, to prevent mats that become painful and can require sedation to shave out. They also tend to produce more hairballs. Factor the grooming time in before choosing on looks alone.
Should I adopt a kitten or an adult cat?
An adult cat's personality is already visible, which removes most of the guesswork this tool can only estimate. Kittens are more adaptable but need considerably more supervision and play, and how they turn out is not fully predictable. Adult cats are also adopted less often, so choosing one frees up shelter capacity.
