Why Does My Cat Meow So Much?

Meowing is almost entirely a human-directed behavior — adult cats rarely meow at each other. Your cat is talking to you specifically.

They want something specific

Greeting and social bonding

A short meow or chirp when you walk in the door is often just a greeting — cats developed this vocal repertoire largely for communicating with humans, since it isn't a major part of how adult cats interact with each other.

Personality and breed

Some cats are simply more vocal than others — Siamese and related breeds are well known for being especially talkative, while others rarely meow at all. A big part of "how much is normal" comes down to your individual cat's baseline.

When increased meowing is worth a vet visit

A cat's baseline "chatty" level is normal for them — a real change from that baseline, especially in an older cat, is the more useful signal to watch for than volume alone.
